It has been sometime since I last wrote to you, and now I want to explain my lack of public activity over recent months.
I spent most of 2012 writing and then recording with the band, and although I was pleased with many elements (the tracks on the Golden EP come from these sessions) as a whole, I didn’t feel there was an album there. After investing so much into the project I made made the very difficult choice of shelving the album. Looking back now I realise I was trying to produce a record as my marriage fell apart. The combination didn’t work for me.
The recording of The Uncarved Block – Part One and the subsequent tour in March last year took place in the weeks after my wife and I separated. If you saw me on tour I think it was obvious I was going through a tough time relationship wise. Although it was a period of great sadness and uncertainty, the recording and touring kept me sane: I was surrounded by good friends in the studio and on stage, and I had you wonderful lot with me at every show! However, I did struggle after that and spent the rest of 2013 dealing with the fallout from the abrupt end of an eleven year relationship.
I’m happy to say that life has picked up since. I’m off my knees and back in the drivers seat! So, I’m writing 2013 off: consigning it to the emotional trashcan, chalking it up to experience and letting it become part of my life’s crazy patchwork quilt. I’m looking to the future.
I am incredibly proud of The Uncarved Block – Part One. The work I did with the band in Devon, Spain and LA has brought me full circle, and Part One is the record I set out to make before any studio work started. I apologise to those of you who haven’t been able to attend a show and buy a copy of it. This will change in the coming months, as my current priority is to get a full release for Part One, and start recording and setting up the release of Part Two. This is an exciting prospect, and I’m hoping that some of you may be able to get involved with backing this financially (more information on that below!). Part One will be on sale at the shows, but in the meantime here’s a full length version of String and Bow for you to listen to.
Finally, if you came to a live show last year, or were one of the many who wrote to me with such kind words about my music – thank you. I may not reply to every message, but each one means a lot to me.
SEE YOU SOON!
